Detail 02: The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp. The spectators are dressed festive, as public – though paid – anatomy lessons were a social event during the 17th century. As there was no electricity at those times, needed for the refrigeration in order to store the bodies, such anatomy lessons could happen only during the colder months.
